Just back from a perfect summer evening at the foot of Haystack Butte celebrating with Don and Maggie, their family and friends.
(Don is the cultural documentarian at Sinte Gleska University; Maggie is Head of the Art Department at the University.)

Don was hospitalized from mid-March until 1 week ago waiting for a heart transplant.
He still hasn't gotten one but was sent home with an LVAD (left ventricular assist device) implanted in his chest to keep him alive while he waits.
His birthday is in 2 days and they decided to celebrate the fact that he's still alive - and back on the Plains, able to sit around the drum and sing the sacred songs of the Sundance.

A wonderful feast of stews, soups, fry bread and wojapi (a 'fruit soup' made with chokecherries, perfect for dipping fry bread in, if you like; I like my fry bread plain!)

There was a timelessness about the evening; watching the children running across the fields, playing on the brush piles and hay bales as drums and chants provided background music that was breathtaking.

Please keep Don and Maggie and all who love them in your prayers.
